According to her relatives, Jan Gaye passed away on Saturday at her home in Rhode Island from an unidentified cause. She had a 66-year-old age.
During a 1973 recording session for his album Let's Get It On at Hitsville West in Los Angeles, producer Ed Townsend introduced the singer to Hunter Gaye.
At the time, Gaye was married to Berry Gordy's sister Anna Gordy; Hunter Gaye was 17 and he was 34.
Gaye recorded "Jan" for his albums Marvin Gaye Live! in 1974 and I Want You in 1976. He penned the song for his future wife.
