Emory Tate was born in 1958 in Chicago, Illinois, to a well-known lawyer, Emory Andrew Tate Sr. When he was young, he began to play chess. While he was a sergeant in the US Air Force, his fluency in languages was very helpful.

He became known as a shrewd and risky tactician after winning almost 80 games in tournaments against Grandmaster. The US Armed Forces Chess Championship saw Tate win the top prize five times.
After winning the state championship six times, he was granted admission to the Indiana State Chess Hall of Fame in 2005. (1995, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2006, and 2007). In 2010, he also won the Alabama state championship.
